Double Dragon coming back in 2017

First numbered sequel since 1990

In observance of the 30th anniversary year of the original Double Dragon's arcade launch, Double Dragon 4 will come to PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, Arc System Works announced today.

Double Dragon 4 launches Jan. 20, 2017, worldwide. The original development staff from the arcade version of Double Dragon is on this project, including producer Takaomi Kaneko, director Yoshihisa Kishimoto, character designer Koji Ogata, composer Kazunaka Yamane, and programmer Kei Oyama.

There aren't many details as to what this sequel will entail, other than the game will follow Double Dragon's old school pixelated visuals and offer both a story mode and a two-player duel. Double Dragon's catchy theme song appears to have gotten a remix, too.

It has been 27 years since the last numbered sequel in the classic side-scrolling beat-em up series. Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone launched in 1990, making its way onto a variety of home platforms later.

Technos Japan, the original maker of the series, went bust in 1996. Its assets and copyrights are now owned by Arc System Works, best known for the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue fighting franchises.
