Watch the first trailer for The Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise

First in Universal’s new cinematic universe

The first trailer for the Tom Cruise-led reboot of The Mummy is finally here, more than three years after Universal Pictures announced that it was working on a cinematic universe based on classic Hollywood monster franchises.

The film follows a group of archaeologists who accidentally awaken an evil spirit. Unlike previous versions of the film, the mummy is an ancient queen — Ahmanet (played by Sofia Boutella) — who has been robbed of her rightful destiny and has awaken after thousands of years to take revenge. Cruise stars as Nick Morton, one of the archaeologists tasked with taking on Ahmanet and sending her back to her tomb before it’s too late.

The film is the first in Universal's planned series of monster movies. Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing are all on the schedule, with an eventual Avengers-inspired crossover planned to bring all of them together.

The Mummy, the first film to be directed by Alex Kurtzman, is slated to hit theaters June 9, 2017.
