Recently at PlayStation Experience we played through a demo of Loot Rascals. The roguelike tribute to retro sci-fi films opens with one of the most charming cutscenes of all time.
In Loot Rascals, you loot cards from fallen enemies and arrange them on a grid. The layout of the cards will change what powers your character has. And of course, when you die, enemies will loot you.
One of the cool things about the game is that death and regeneration — a staple of the roguelike — has an in-world justification. There’s some sort of wacky hostile alien force living on the planet that wants you to keep killing monsters. Every time you die, she screws you right back together and sends you back into the fray.
Oh, but without your card collection.
Sorry.
Loot Rascals will be released in early 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC. Right now the developers are selling game keys through itch.io to give players early access and help iron out the game’s difficulty. Players who buy this so-called “Refinery Edition” will receive a Steam key to the final product when it is released.
