We recently had the chance to go hands-on with Hyrule Warriors Legends, the Nintendo 3DS port of last year's Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U, and spent a bit of time with three of the game's new characters — yes, including Linkle.

One important note about Linkle — she is not just "female Link." Nintendo representatives went out of their way to point out that she's an entirely distinct character with her own playable story elements added for Hyrule Warriors Legends — Nintendo hinted that over the course of your time playing Legends, players will learn that Linkle has more or less been a part of the tale the entire time.

Also new for the 3DS version: the ability to select up to three playable characters and issue them commands or swap between them using the touchscreen. Above, watch as we engage in combat with Linkle, Toon Link and Tetra (all new characters for the 3DS version), swapping between them freely, all before spending some time customizing our fairy in the new My Fairy mode.

It's also worth noting that according to Nintendo, Hyrule Warriors Legends "plays best on New Nintendo 3DS." The port is pushing even the new version of the handheld to its limits, and it shows; the framerate occasionally dipped down to some pretty undesirable levels during our session with the game, and according to Nintendo, 3D mode is not available on non-New versions of the portable.

Hyrule Warriors Legends is coming to the Nintendo 3DS on March 25.
