Game video site GameTrailers closed its doors today. Statements posted to social media this afternoon stated that the 13-year-old site "is closing down today."
Editor-in-chief Brandon Jones tweeted that "today is the last day of GameTrailers. I wish it wasn't so." The site was posting its standard fare of video reviews, trailers and guides right up to the surprise announcement.
Launched in 2002, GameTrailers was an early runner in the burgeoning sector of video-based gaming coverage. Today's Facebook announcement focused on the growth in Let's Plays and video-based game journalism. "We're proud we helped bring this world into being. That is the legacy of GameTrailers," it said.
GameTrailers was purchased by Defy Media in the middle of 2014. Almost immediately, the company imposed layoffs, with more taking place last year. Defy Media is also publisher of The Escapist, among other online destinations.
Polygon has put a call into Defy to get full confirmation and a statement.
