How well does Dark Souls perform on Xbox One?

A detailed look at backward compatibility

Now that the original Dark Souls is playable on Xbox One, thanks to backward compatibility support for the Xbox 360 game, you might be wondering, "How well does Dark Souls, a game with its share of frame rate problems, perform on current-generation console hardware?" Fortunately, the team at Digital Foundry has the answer to that question.

In brief, it's OK.

According to Digital Foundry's tests, Dark Souls on Xbox One comes with many of the same frame rate dips, though it can occasionally perform better in certain areas. The infamous Blighttown region is still a slideshow, dipping down to 10-15 frames per second on Xbox One. There are also gamma issues — the game is noticeably darker on Xbox One — and frame pacing issues, leading to some additional choppiness, even when the frame rate holds up.

Check out the side-by-side performance video above for more.
