Listen to the mysterious new voicemail teaser for the Assassin’s Creed film

It's no trailer, but it's...something

In anticipation of this December's Assassin's Creed, 20th Century Fox updated its tie-in answering machine with the first "clip" of Michael Fassbender as protagonist Callum Lynch.

Calling the number first teased by the movie's Twitter account last December, which belongs to Abstergo Industries' CEO Alan Rikkin, immediately leads to voicemail. The message that played several months back alerted callers that Rikkin was on a business trip — one due to end on March 25.

In the full clip below, the mysterious businessman, who serves as the film's chief villain, says that he's still unavailable. We stuck around after the "beep" to hear a new voice altogether, however.

Aguilar, time-traveling protagonist Callum Lynch's assassin doppelgänger, is referring to his history-spanning brotherhood of assassins. They're united by a mission to take down the Templars, who, among other things, founded Abstergo Industries.

Although we originally thought that the December message would lead to the movie's first trailer, timed with today's release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, that doesn't appear to be the case. Franchise creator Ubisoft did upload new photos from Assassin's Creed earlier this week, however — which isn't quite the same thing as a trailer, of course. They do remind fans that the feature, which wrapped in January, is ever closer to its Dec. 21 premiere.

Fans can also look forward to a virtual reality experience based on the movie later this year. That's as close as Ubisoft is getting to releasing a new Assassin's Creed game in 2016; it previously announced that the series will take a break so that the company can "re-examine the franchise."
