Dark Souls meets Resident Evil in Chronos, our hands-on preview for Oculus Rift

A team of developers best known for their work on Darksiders tackles VR with style

Announced just this past summer, Chronos is an adventure game scheduled as a launch title for the Oculus Rift. Matt Leone and I both had hands-on time with the game last week at this year's Game Developers Conference, and sat down for a quick preview.

Chronos takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. Characters take on the role of a nameless hero sent on a mission to defeat a dragon and save his people. Pretty standard stuff when you write it out, but the game impressed us both with its presentation.

So much of the challenge of developing for virtual reality is in communicating to the player what they are, physically, in the game space. The team at Gunfire Games, best known for their work on the Darksiders series, tackled the problem by allowing players to physically embody the game's camera. From this fixed perspective players are free to look around the environment while maneuvering their character around in three dimensions.

It's a bit like playing Dark Souls from inside a Resident Evil game. Check it out in our video above.
