Kingdom Hearts hit PlayStation 2 in Japan on March 28, 2002, and director Tetsuya Nomura has debuted a new screenshot from an upcoming game in honor of the series' 14th birthday.
He tweeted the birthday message below — at age 14, the series is now as old as protagonist Sora was in Kingdom Hearts — on its official account, including an image from Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover, one of several titles included in PlayStation 4 compilation Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
KH誕生から今日で14年との事。ソラが旅立った年齢になりましたね。長く支えて下さっている皆さんのおかげです。ありがとうございます。KHⅡ.8から開発中の夜明けの街をお届けします。今後もよろしくお願いします。

The location seen is Daybreak Town, a setting from Kingdom Hearts χ that's getting the high-definition treatment for Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover. In 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Back Cover is comprised of revamped cinematics drawn from Kingdom Hearts χ. That game is currently available in Japan for browsers, iOS and Android. A Western release for the mobile version, which serves as a prequel to the series, is planned but remains unscheduled.
Square Enix is developing the cutscenes that comprise Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover with the same engine it's using for Kingdom Hearts 3. That game is still without a release date, but Japanese players can expect to play 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue later this year. Announced last September, the PS4 release also includes a remake of Dream Drop Distance and the new "episode" Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage.
