Gears of War 4's newest trailer introduces a new hero, and a familiar face

Was "Mad World" really 10 years ago?

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Gears of War 4's latest trailer took a page from the first game's landmark "Mad World" trailer from 2006, using another pensive, sorrowful melody — this time "The Sound of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel, as covered by Disturbed. The video, which aired during Fear The Walking Dead last night, introduces us to J.D. Fenix and a new menace.

J.D. is the son of Marcus Fenix, hero of the first three Gears of War games. Whatever he is up against looks very nasty and very undead, at minimum feral. Marcus shows up in a childhood flashback; hey, at least they didn't use "Cat's in the Cradle."

Gears of War 4 will feature an all new cast of heroes when it launches Oct. 11 on Xbox One. A multiplayer beta begins later this month, with "early access" starting April 18 for those who played Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Windows PC or Xbox One. Xbox Live Gold subscribers get in beginning April 25. The beta will run until May 1.
