It didn't take long after the first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dropped for the internet to ask the inevitable question: Was Jyn Erso the mother of Rey?
It's not too far of a jump: The timeline would sync up pretty well and there are definitely similar characteristics between Jyn Erso — played by Felicity Jones — and Rey from The Force Awakens, played by Daisy Ridley. At the MTV Movie Awards last night, however, Ridley spoke up about the rumors and denied there was much basis in them.
"I'm not being funny you guys, but just because she's white and got brown hair doesn't mean she's my mom," Ridley told MTV.
Ridley, who admitted to knowing who her character's parents were before they even started filming, said it's not as big a deal as people are making it out to be. Rather, she insisted, it was far more interesting to look at Rey and Finn, two people who came from a background without much family support, and examine the familial unit they created with each other.
The actress also told MTV that while questions were going around the internet over whether Rey would turn out to be a Jedi, she didn't think that was the case. Instead, she compared herself more to General Leia Oragana and her ability to use the Force.
"I don't know if I'm a Jedi ... I don't think I am," Ridley said. "We've had this debate as to whether Leia is because she uses her Force powers."
Ridley couldn't offer any details on Rogue One (which makes sense considering she's not involved in the project), but said many of these questions would be answered with Episode VIII.
The eighth canonical installment in the Star Wars franchise, being directed by Rian Johnson, arrives in theaters Dec. 15, 2017.
