Sega Europe announced today that a new Sega Genesis-themed hub — a virtual game room of sorts — is coming to Steam on April 28. It's a new way for classic gaming fans to steep themselves in 16-bit '90s nostalgia, Sega says, and it will be free. More interesting, though, is another Sega announcement: Sega is bringing Steam Workshop support to Genesis and Mega Drive games.
Every Sega Genesis game on Steam "will now feature Steam Workshop support allowing you to share modified versions of your favourite retro Sega titles," the company said on its U.K. website. Exactly what that mod support will entail isn't clear, however. Sega community manager Dan Sheridan said on Twitter that the company will reveal those details sometime next week.
We do know more about the Sega Mega Drive Classics Hub — which will presumably be called the Sega Genesis Classics Hub, if it comes to North America. It will be a 3D recreation of an early '90s Sega fan's bedroom, "with dynamic time-of-day conditions, retro Sega paraphernalia, a shelf full of Mega Drive games." It will also include a virtual CRT television on which to play 16-bit Sega games.
Sega says anyone who owns a Genesis game on Steam will get the new hub for free. They'll just need to update their games on Steam. To date, Sega has released 50 Genesis games on Steam, including classics like Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi, Phantasy Star 2 and Streets of Rage.
