Miitomo celebrates 10 million downloads

Here's how Nintendo's partying it up

Miitomo has been downloaded over 10 million times worldwide, Nintendo announced in a press release. That's a major milestone for the app, Nintendo's first for smartphones, reached just shy of a month since its stateside release.

To celebrate hitting 10 million users on iOS and Android, Nintendo will host a special promotion for users April 29-May 9. During the period, players will be treated to daily bonuses, including Miitomo coins and tickets. Nintendo will give away a total of 5,000 Miitomo coins and 12 game tickets by the end of the 10-day event.

Three previously Japan-exclusive Miitomo Drop stages will also be available during the celebration. Players can look forward to spending all of their game tickets in one go on the "Look sharp! Smart Dresser!" Miitomo Drop boards running May 2-8.

In the meantime, Miitomo diehards can check out the new Splatoon gear. Costumes and clothing items based on the Wii U game are now available to collect in the app, including wigs that Nintendo is giving away to all players.

Nintendo also noted that Miitomo fans have taken to the Miifoto feature. Miitfoto is an Instagram-style part of the app that lets players take photos of Miis using custom backdrops, facial expressions and other options. More than 20 million Miifotos have been created and shared, Nintendo said.

Nintendo has plans for at least four more mobile games in the works with partner DeNA, to be released by March 2017. Coming this fall are two mobile games based on popular Nintendo franchises: Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing. Few details are known yet, but Nintendo claimed that they'll feature more "prominent game elements" than the social network-style Miitomo.
