Yo-Kai Watch and Final Fantasy 14 make for a strangely great pair in new crossovers

Two RPGs come together like peanut butter and jelly

Square Enix and Level-5 are collaborating to bring the worlds of Yo-Kai Watch and Final Fantasy 14 together. During a Final Fantasy 14-centric livestream, the companies announced that characters from Level-5's Nintendo 3DS role-playing game would appear in Square Enix's multiplayer online title.

Various Yo-kai, like series mascots Jibanyan and Whisper, will appear in Final Fantasy 14 as minions, pets that can be summoned to follow the player around. Weapons based on characters in the games will also be available, including a flying Whisper mount and even one of those surprisingly heavy Yo-kai Watches.

These will be available to players of the Japanese version of Final Fantasy 14 as part of an upcoming event. Japanese fans will also be treated to Final Fantasy characters appearing in the next Yo-Kai Watch game on 3DS. A Chocobo and Moogle will get the collectible Yo-kai treatment, becoming Chocobonyan and Mooglinyan, respectively.

Yo-Kai Watch 3 launches on Nintendo 3DS in Japan this July. Final Fantasy 14 is currently playable on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC worldwide — making this the Yo-Kai Watch series' debut on home consoles.

Stateside fans of monster-collecting RPGs can check out the first Yo-Kai Watch on Nintendo 3DS. Read our review for more on the game, which arrived last November.
