Get a taste of 'masocore' samurai action

Samurai action game Nioh is coming to PlayStation 4 this year, publisher Koei Tecmo confirmed today, and will get a playable alpha demo later this month.

Nioh's alpha demo will be available on PS4 from April 26 to May 5. Developer Team Ninja, of Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive fame, says the demo is being released to solicit feedback on the action game; an online survey will be available during the demo period, Team Ninja says.

Players who clear a stage in Nioh's alpha demo will get access to downloadable content, The Mark of the Conqueror, in the full game.

In a statement posted to the PlayStation Blog, Team Ninja offered its take on what Nioh is all about.

"Set in a time of civil war in Japan, Nioh not only incorporates classic elements such as samurai and supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore, but also offers the exhilaration of an authentic samurai sword fight straight from Team Ninja, the team that defined brutal action games," the developer said.

Koei Tecmo is playing up the difficulty of Nioh in a new trailer for the game, seen above, and in a statement from Koei CEO and producer Kou Shibusawa. "We hope you enjoy overcoming the challenges in this masocore take on samurai action," Shibusawa said.

Nioh was first announced in 2006, as a PlayStation 3 title. Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja revealed that the game was bound for PS4 at last year's Tokyo Game Show.
