The trailer for Swiss Army Man, released today by distributor A24, opens with a man preparing to hang himself on a beach when he spots a corpse that has washed up on the shore. The man (Paul Dano) investigates the dead body (Daniel Radcliffe), and hears the corpse expel a long, wet fart.
Things only get stranger from there, as Hank (Dano) and Manny (Radcliffe) become best friends on a deserted island. Has Hank gone mad? Probably. But it seems Manny is the only one who can help Hank find his way back to the woman he loves in this magical realist tale.
Swiss Army Man is the first feature film from directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, who go by the moniker Daniels. The pair is best known for directing music videos, including the wild body-gyrating one for DJ Snake and Lil Jon's "Turn Down for What."
A24 debuted Swiss Army Man at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in January, where it won a directing award for dramas from the U.S. but received a divisive reception for its puerile humor. Variety reports that "a continuous stream of audience members kept standing up and bolting for the door throughout the film."
Swiss Army Man, which also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), is set to hit theaters June 17.
