A recently released ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis injects a little modern day Sonic into the 1991 game, and the results are both a little painful and pretty hilarious.

Dubbed "Sonic 1 Boomed," the ROM hack from artist VAdePEGA fills the original Sonic the Hedgehog with quips and catchphrases from Sonic's current iteration. The Sonic sprite has also been modified; gone is chubby Sonic, replaced with the leaner, heavily bandaged Sonic introduced in the Sonic Boom games and animated series.

You can watch a playthrough of the ROM hack in the video above.

Sonic the Hedgehog's next outing, a new Sonic Boom game, is coming later this year.
