With the television upfronts (a media event where the heads of television networks preview the upcoming fall season) just a week away, NBC is making bold moves. The network announced today that it would be ordering its superhero-workplace comedy based on DC characters, Powerless, a full series order and released the first few images from the show.
The series, which takes place within the DC universe but won't focus on any of the major superheroes, follows a group of normal human beings at the worst insurance company in the country. The show has been compared to NBC's other famous single-camera comedy, The Office, in terms of comedic stylings and pacing.
The series will star Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical), Danny Pudi (Community) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly), along with a few other relatively new faces. Hudgens will play Emily Locke, one of the insurance agents trying to maneuver being normal in a world full of superheroes, while Pudi will play her best friend, Teddy. Tudyk will play Del, the newly promoted boss who just so happens to be the son of the company's owner and a raging narcissist.
NBC said that the show will follow Hudgens' character as she learns (during one particularly terrible commute into the city) that she can stand up for herself and be a hero even without any super powers.
"Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn't always require superpowers," a press release read.
Powerless is set to premiere this fall on NBC. Check out the first photos from the show below.
