John Boyega has said before that Star Wars: Episode VIII will be much darker than the previous installment, The Force Awakens. In sticking to that theme, Boyega confirmed that despite the obvious feelings at play, Finn and Rey (Daisy Ridley) are just platonic friends.
In an interview with Variety, Boyega talked about the plans director Rian Johnson had for the movie, but also spent some time addressing the future of Finn and Rey. While Boyega said there will be a romance angle, he promised that it wasn't going to go the way people imagined.
"Daisy and I, we're friends. Finn and Rey — they're just friends," Boyega said. "Finn is a stormtrooper so he doesn't really know what's going on."
Boyega spoke briefly about what Johnson was doing for the eighth film, and told Variety that it's definitely darker and bigger than J.J. Abrams' Force Awakens. Boyega added that Johnson was coming at it from a completely different angle and said that while he didn't think it could get bigger than The Force Awakens, Johnson proved him wrong.
Even though Episode VIII is still more than a year away, Boyega, Ridley and the rest of the Star Wars family have been hard at work, posting regular videos to Instagram and Facebook showing off their time in the gym.
Star Wars: Episode VIII will hit theaters Dec. 15, 2017, but those looking to get their hands on a new Star Wars movie before then can do so on Dec. 16 with Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
