Overwatch star Winston unravels the game's backstory in new teaser

Are you ready to fight alongside him in this week's beta?

Overwatch's preeminent gorilla scientist, Winston, tells the tale of Blizzard's upcoming character-based shooter in the new teaser above. In the style of the game's animated shorts, he narrates (after a few false starts) the story of Overwatch: how the titular force was created 30 years back to lead the charge against the Omnics.

That's the story Winston starts telling — that is, until the brainiac cuts himself off. It's been 30 years since the Overwatch fell from glory. At the game's start, it's time for players to again lead the charge and save the world.

"Are you with me?" he asks. That question is posed just before the game's next beta launch. Starting May 5 at 4 p.m. PT, players can check out the game's open beta. That campaign is available on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One through May 9, and is open to all.

Customers who pre-ordered before April 29 will be able to dive into Overwatch ahead of schedule, however. The Early Access period runs May 3-4.

Gear up for the shooter by delving into its characters, like bounty hunter McCree, star of Overwatch's first interactive comic, and Widowmaker the assassin, who was featured in the latest animation. The full game launches on May 24.
