Subject-specific web domains are all the rage these days, and game makers will surely want to snatch up the latest type: . game domains, which are now available for anyone to acquire.

Uniregistry manages registrations for the top-level domain .game, and the company launched .game to the public on May 24 following a weeklong period of early access. A year ago, Uniregistry beat out giants like Google and Amazon to acquire the rights to run .game.

A wide variety of heavy hitters in the video game world have already reserved .game domains for themselves, and "virtually all of the leading gaming brands" did so by the end of launch day, according to Uniregistry.

Blizzard Entertainment came out of the gate with a strong showing — the studio picked up .game domains for Warcraft, StarCraft, Hearthstone, Diablo and Heroes of the Storm during the early registration period, and got one for Overwatch when the game launched on May 24. If you thought you could beat companies to the punch for names like Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo, you're already out of luck.

plenty of .game domains remain unclaimed at this early stage

"We're excited to bring .game to the internet, and we are especially pleased to see the early adoption of the name by the world's leading gaming companies," said Frank Schilling, founder and managing director of Uniregistry, in a press release. "The broad-based support of .game by the companies that make the world's most exciting and immersive form of entertainment is deeply gratifying."

Major corporations aren't the only entities who have acquired .game domains. Uniregistry highlighted Georgia van Cuylenberg, a voice actress with credits in games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic and the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy, who bought

Of course, plenty of .game domains remain unclaimed at this early stage. Microsoft has reserved ones for its main Xbox franchises, such as Halo, Gears of War and Forza Motorsport, but Sony hasn't done the same for its major brands — .game domains for series like Uncharted, Gran Turismo, God of War and LittleBigPlanet are available for the low, low price of $318.88 a year. Nintendo bought one for the Wii, but not the NX. Electronic Arts owns one for EA Sports, but not FIFA; the FIFA organization itself snatched up that one.
