Overwatch porn makers get served with takedowns

A few weeks ago, PornHub gleefully latched onto the hype for Overwatch by noting the volume of searches for porn featuring the game's characters. (And yes, these searches actually return Overwatch porn videos.) Now it appears that someone, possibly the game's maker, is trying to shut down the genre of Overwatch erotica.

PCGamesN reports that takedown notices (on grounds of copyright infringement) are being sent to porn video channels where users have run Overwatch assets through Valve's Source Filmmaker toolkit and uploaded the steamy results.

The takedowns come from a company called Irdeto, though, which is a security firm whose services "protect digital platforms and assets across multiple industries, such as media & entertainment, payments, and automotive." PCGamesN speculates Irdeto was hired to police this so that Blizzard employees don't have to squeegee themselves after searching for Overwatch porn, and that makes sense. Why else would Irdeto have the standing to get the content pulled?

We've sent the obligatory request for comment to Blizzard but it's the Saturday before Memorial Day, so don't hold your breath waiting for a reply.

Overwatch launched on Tuesday, and began its open beta on May 3 (not coincidentally, the day Gearbox's Battleborn launched). At that time, PornHub pimped a news release to pretty much everyone noting that searches for Overwatch on its site surged more than 800 percent. Typically, much of the porny Overwatch content on the channel relates to Tracer, whose butt caused a controversy back in April.
