Details on Electronic Arts and DICE's new Battlefield game appear to have leaked a bit early, thanks to the Xbox Store. An image from Battlefield 5 — or Battlefield 1, as another leak seems to confirm — seems to confirm long-standing rumors that DICE's shooter will take place during the First World War, or an alternate-history version of that conflict.
Artwork apparently from the new Battlefield shows a soldier armed with an early 20th century pistol, a rifle and a spiked trench club. He also appears to be standing in front of a zeppelin, an airship that was used during World War I.
If accurate, Battlefield 5's time period would stand in stark contrast to rival Call of Duty, which is venturing far into the future and deep space with this year's Infinite Warfare.
We'll find out more, officially, when EA and DICE reveal official details on the next Battlefield game later today.
Correction: An earlier version of this article identified the soldier's left-hand weapon as a grenade. It appears to be a trench club.
Update: According to promotional details posted to Reddit, the title of DICE's new game is Battlefield 1. Those materials also date the game for Oct. 18 and indicate that a pre-order incentive called the Hellfighter Pack will be included as part of the game. The Hellfighter Pack will include items "inspired by" the U.S. Army's 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters.
