Neil Gaiman's acclaimed fantasy novel, American Gods, is heading to Starz next year and the network has just released the first look at the characters in action.
Exclusively on Entertainment Weekly, the first photo shows off an infamous scene from the novel where Shadow (Ricky Whittle), a recently released convict, gets into a fight with a pretty drunk leprechaun while the illusive Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) watches. In the book, the scene takes place inside Jack's Crocodile Bar, which occurs pretty early on. Showrunner Bryan Fuller said that it was one of the scenes they were most interested in shooting going into production.
"[Jack's] is a kind of hillbilly chic aesthetic for Shadow's entrée into the world of the gods," Fuller told Entertainment Weekly.
The second photo shows Mr. Wednesday watching Shadow fight, a look of intrigue on his face. Fuller said that finding two actors with the type of chemistry that Wednesday and Shadow need was of the highest priority, and fans of the book will be happy to see that the chemistry is definitely there.
American Gods follows Shadow as he's brought into an ongoing war between a team of old gods and a team of new gods who are battling over the ideals they hold dear. The old gods are upset that the new gods are materialistic and consider them to be a disgrace to their existence, while the new gods are fed up with the antiquated ideas of the old gods.
The show is set to debut sometime in 2017.
