Mon Mothma, the Rebellion's leader, gets some overdue screentime in Rogue One

Let's be clear: She's running this show, not Leia, dammit

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Mon Mothma was one of those Star Wars characters, like Crix Madine (portrayed by a time-traveling Michael McWhertor) whose name you never learned until she showed up as an action figure a year after everyone had seen the movie five times. She'll have a much more substantial role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, per Lucasfilm's boss.

"The Rebel alliance is in disarray," Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm's president, said in setting the scene for Rogue One. "Pretty panicked. Up against it. And she is trying the best she can to provide the leadership, in amongst a wide variety of Rebel soldiers that have very differing opinions as to what to do."

What's intriguing is the reminder that the new Mon Mothma, Genevieve O'Reilly — a dead ringer for her predecessor of 33 years (Caroline Blakiston) — was cast for a short scene in Revenge of the Sith 11 years ago. Her scene was cut (if only to prove someone edited that trainwreck) but made it into the DVD release. When Rogue One's story was finalized and up for casting, director Gareth Edwards hired O'Reilly back for some proper screentime.

Zero Bothan spies died to bring you this information, but I thought it was nonetheless interesting to Star Wars fans. Rogue One premieres Dec. 16.
