Rihanna will debut the music video for her Star Trek song in IMAX

First music video to get an IMAX debut

Star Trek Beyond

Rihanna debuted her new official song for Paramount’s upcoming Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, on Monday, and today the singer announced that she would be the first musician to have a music video debut in IMAX theaters.

The video is also the first to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, on the same hardware that was used to capture the climactic battle sequence in Captain America: Civil War. Although it doesn’t specify whether the video will contain scenes from Star Trek Beyond, there’s a very good chance they will be integrated into the video. Beyond was also shot on IMAX cameras, and this feels like an experiment for both studios involved in production.

The song, "Sledgehammer," is currently available to purchase through iTunes or stream on Apple Music, Tidal and Spotify, but the video will get a theatrical debut on Thursday, June 30 before it’s made available online. Rihanna tweeted out a 30-second preview of the video today on Twitter, which can be seen above, and confirmed that after it premiered in IMAX theaters at 9 a.m. ET, it would be available to stream on Vevo and Tidal at 10 a.m.

Star Trek Beyond is the third in the series from Paramount and stars Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and the late Anton Yelchin. Unlike the first two films, J.J. Abrams won’t be directing. He’ll act as an executive producer with Justin Lin stepping up to helm the feature.
