This year’s Evolution Championship Series fighting game tournament — more commonly known as Evo — will be the event’s largest by a wide margin. More than 14,000 registered fighters will compete across nine games at Evo 2016, with more than 5,000 of those competing just in Street Fighter 5.
Evo co-founder Joey Cuellar tweeted out the final registration numbers for this year’s tournament earlier this morning. Here’s the breakdown:
- Street Fighter 5 - 5,065
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - 2,637
- Super Smash Bros. Melee - 2,350
- Pokkén Tournament - 1,165
- Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator - 903
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - 770
- Mortal Kombat X - 707
- Tekken 7 - 543
- Killer Instinct - 540
The number of players competing in Street Fighter 5 this year more than doubles last year’s turnout for Ultra Street Fighter 4. Evo 2015 saw about 2,200 players battle it out in USF4. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U also saw a rise in competitors this year, up from about 1,900 at Evo 2015. While some players are expected to compete in multiple games, the total number of registrants at Evo 2016 is larger than the capacity of the 12,000-seat Mandalay Bay Events Center, where the tournament’s finals will be held.
Evo 2016 takes place July 15-17 in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
