The Evolution Championship Series is heading to Japan, organizers announced at Evo today. More details on Evo Japan will be revealed at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Evo’s Mark "MarkMan" Julio said.

The Evo Japan announcement was made in conjunction with Street Fighter and Tekken producers Yoshinori Ono and Katsuhiro Harada, so it’s safe to say Capcom and Bandai Namco’s fighting games will be represented at the Japanese tournament.

Evo organizers previously announced an Evo Japan tournament in 2010. Titled Evo vs. Godsgarden (an existing Japanese fighting game event), the tournament was scheduled to take place May 6-7, 2011. However, due to the Tohoku earthquake and following tsunami that spring, the tournament was postponed indefinitely.

Evo co-founder Joey "MrWizard" Cuellar said in 2013 that plans to bring Evo to Japan were still in the works.

This year’s Tokyo Game Show runs Sept. 15-18. Polygon will be in attendance at TGS 2016 to bring you coverage from the show.
