Sonic Mania is the next game in the 25-year-old franchise. The game is slated for Spring 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. The news comes from a livestream of Sonic's birthday party, held as part of San Diego Comic-Con 2016.
The 2D adventure harkens back to the Sega Genesis days, with three playable characters — Sonic, Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles — and includes new abilities and worlds to explore. The game will also included classic stages featuring "new twists," members of Sega said during the stream.
Following the trailer reveal, they announced that the game would be playable at the event itself.
Sonic Mania is set to be the series' 25th anniversary title, although it won't launch until next year. Sega first confirmed the title last month, just after Sonic's birthday on June 25. Still, the upcoming game is the biggest announcement of several pieces of Sonic-related news coming out of this year's Comic-Con event, including a merchandising crossover between Sonic the Hedgehog and Sanrio characters, like Hello Kitty.
Coming later this year is Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice on Nintendo 3DS. The game launches this September and is based on the Sonic Boom cartoon, which airs on cable channel Cartoon Network. The TV show will return for a second season, with new episodes currently in production.
