The entire 2016 USA Basketball Men's National Team will be featured in NBA 2K17 alongside head coach Mike Krzyzewski, and the 1992 USA Basketball "Dream Team" also returns when the game launches Sept. 20.
The inclusions mean 2K Sports was able to license USA Basketball's symbols and, in his last year as USA Basketball men's head coach, reach a deal with Krzyzewski, who came in for a full head and body scan. The 2016 USA men's team features Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and DeMarcus Cousins, all of whom already appear in NBA 2K on their respective teams. NBA 2K17 cover star Paul George also is on the men's team, which tips off in the 2016 Summer Olympics beginning Aug. 6.
The Dream Team is being dangled as a pre-order bonus only for now. But it still means that 2K Sports' deals with all-time greats like Scottie Pippen and Charles Barkley remain intact. Both players, key figures on the 1992 Olympic team, were difficult to sign when 2K Sports set out to bring back the team in NBA 2K13.
Pippen at first refused, and reconsidered after his wife and son argued for him to rejoin the roster. And Barkley, who declined to appear with the 1985 Philadelphia 76ers in NBA 2K12, had to be convinced by Jay-Z, who served as executive producer for NBA 2K13.
Those who do pony up for NBA 2K17 before it launches on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One will also get it four days early on Sept. 16.
