Professor Layton’s next game stars the young Lady Layton (update)

Layton's daughter leaves the nest

Lady Layton is the latest entry in the Professor Layton series, developer Level-5 announced today. It revealed the title during this year’s Level-5 Vision event, livestreamed from Japan earlier today.

The trailer above (courtesy of Nintendo Everything) introduces the professor-turned-puzzle-master’s daughter. (A direct translation of her name is not yet available, with different sources calling her Catoleil, Catriel and other derivations.) Like her dad, she has a fondness for solving mysteries, and she’s joined by a canine companion as she ventures across a baroque-style village.

Lady Layton will bring the series back to portables following a short hiatus. 2012's spinoff Layton Brothers is an iOS and Android exclusive, featuring Layton's son Alfendi Layton. In June, Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino hinted that the puzzle franchise would return for a new mainline game, but the lead character himself would be taking a break for some new stars when the series returned.

We last saw dad Hershel Layton, his young ward Luke and others in Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, which launched stateside in 2014.

Lady Layton will launch next year on Nintendo 3DS, as well as Android and iOS devices. A Western release has not been confirmed.

Update: Level-5 confirmed that Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone's Conspiracy is heading stateside sometime next year. In a press release, the developer also said that Layton's daughter is known as Kat, short for Katrielle, and that she'll be solving several cases throughout London. The game's official site includes screenshots and more info, albeit just in Japanese for now.
