Last week, Sega unveiled Sonic Mania at Sonic the Hedgehog's memorable 25th anniversary celebration. The new title, which is due sometime in spring 2017, is a throwback to Sonic the Hedgehog games of yore, promising classic 2D gameplay on new and remixed zones.
We got to play two of Sonic Mania's levels, a remixed Green Hill Zone and the new Studiopolis Zone, a take on the classic Casino Zone-style levels from Sonic's 16-bit days. As illustrated in the video above, which features eight minutes of Sonic Mania gameplay, the new Sonic game goes above and beyond what the Sega Genesis was capable of graphically. In fact, the new Sonic title imagines what a 2D Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Saturn might look like.
Sonic Mania is being developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games in collaboration with Sega and Christian Whitehead. It's coming to PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One next year.
