Pokémon Sun and Moon’s newest monster debuts at Gamescom

This is one weird-looking fire/dragon-type

Pokémon Sun and Moon’s Alola region is home to several new Pokémon, many of whom we’ve already met, but today at Gamescom, Nintendo revealed one more: Turtonator, a fire/dragon-type difficult to describe.

Its name suggests that it’s inspired by a turtle, as does the shell on its back. But Turtonator faces away from the player in battle, making the Pokémon hard to get a good look at. When it does turn to face the camera, Turtonator’s enraged expression and odd features make us wish it would just spin back around.

The debut trailer above shows off its unique Shell Trap move, where it shoots a laser out of its hardened shell to keep foes grounded. Turtonator also has the Shell Armor ability, so expect high defense stats.

Nintendo is streaming more from Sun and Moon today straight from Gamescom, where Polygon has been reporting from all week. You can follow along with the rest of the Pokémon news in the video below — although be warned that it’s in German.
