The shortlist just got shorter

Captain Marvel

Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Captain Marvel will likely be directed by either Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter or Lorene Scafaria, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Caro, who originates from New Zealand, cut her teeth by writing and directing the drama film Whale Rider in 2002 and went on to direct the recent Disney film McFarland, USA. Glatter is a veteran in television, having directed multiple episodes of Twin Peaks, Freaks and Geeks, Gilmore Girls, Mad Men and Homeland. Scafaria wrote and directed the 2012 comedy Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, which starred Steve Carell and Keira Knightley.

Brie Larson will star as the titular Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, an air force pilot who gains super strength and the power of flight after accidentally fusing genes with an alien. Guardians of the Galaxy's Nicole Perlman and Inside Out's Meg LeFauve are co-writing the movie's screenplay.

Captain Marvel will hit theaters Mar. 8, 2019.
