NHL 17 brings a Draft Champions mode to Ultimate Team

Pick a lineup of all-time greats, or modern stars.

Draft Champions, a fantasy sports mode introduced last year in Madden NFL (and under a different name in FIFA 16) makes its debut in NHL 17 when EA Sports' pro hockey simulation launches Sept. 13 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

This trailer highlights what's in store for the mode, which was revealed back in July. Draft Champions is an Ultimate Team variant that plays somewhat like daily fantasy sports. Users draft a team, doing their best to make it as good as it can be overall. Inevitably, it will have some shortcomings.

Players then take the team online to compete against other users in either single- or double-elimination series, and are rewarded with items and in-game currency for NHL's long-running Hockey Ultimate Team mode.

One variant on NHL Draft Champions appears to be themes for the draft pool, which give users a choice of players from a different era, or with a different trait in common. EA Sports will continually offer new themes in its Draft Champions mode throughout the year. Madden's Draft Champions will offer players a choice of all-time greats in certain rounds, but each team is always built from the same pool.
