Pikmin is coming to Nintendo 3DS in 2017

The latest Pikmin adventure travels easy

A new side-scrolling Pikmin adventure is coming to Nintendo 3DS in 2017, Nintendo's Bill Trinen announced today during a Nintendo Direct presentation.

Few details were given about the game, which does not yet have an official name. During a brief demo, Trinen explained how Pikmin will help explorer Olimar. Players will use the 3DS' touch screen to direct their Pikmin, and each has a different strength. The game's red Pikmin,"as always," will be fire resistant. Blue Pikmin are meant for the water, while yellow Pikmin can be tossed onto higher ground.

Trinen added that the game is being designed "with action in mind."

The first Pikmin game launched in 2001 for the GameCube and was followed up with a sequel on the same console. The latest Pikmin, Pikmin 3, was released for Wii U in 2013. The series follows a tiny explorer named Olimar as he uses these titular characters to gather resources on a strange planet.
