Yesterday, Lucasfilm debuted the newest droid to join the Star Wars universe, C2-B5, during an episode of The Star Wars Show. The astromech, which can be seen in the image below and will debut in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, works for the Empire.
Although it looks like the evil doppleganger of R2-D2, it’s not exactly the same class of droid, but there are some remarkable similarities. Unlike R2, C2-B5 doesn’t have the same luxuries as Star Wars’ most famous astromech. C2-B5, for example, is mostly in charge of ensuring that the machinery that powers the Imperial army is working and kept up to date, maintenance-wise, so that evil plans can be carried out without mechanical fail.

According to Pete Townley, host of The Star Wars Show, the C2-B5 droids have to undergo semi-regular memory wipes in order to keep them from rebelling. The Imperial technicians are not allowed to grant their droids independence, something that R2-D2 has quite a bit of in his own life.
After the episode aired on YouTube, Lucasfilm posted an official look at C2-B5 on the Star Wars Facebook page, but didn’t provide any more information. Fans already know that Alan Tudyk will play another new droid being introduced in Rogue One, K-2SO, who has been described as passive aggressive, sarcastic and highly opinionated.
Rogue One, which follows a group of Rebel operatives, as they try to steal the plans to the Death Star, hits theaters Dec. 16.
