PlayStation 4 slim out next week

Sony finally lets the cat out of the bag

Sony will launch the PlayStation 4 slim on Sept. 15, the company announced during this afternoon’s PlayStation Meeting. The smaller, sleeker PS4 hardware will retail for $299 when it hits shelves later this year.

The company didn't refer to the lighter PS4 as the slim during the event, instead saying it was the "new PlayStation 4."

The PS4 slim is the first revision of the PS4, which launched in 2013. It’s smaller than the older system and weighs in lighter than its older brother. It also comes equipped with a new DualShock 4 controller, which looks much the same as the current one, albeit with grayer face buttons and more lights.

While Sony confirmed that the hardware was coming for the first time today, the PS4 slim has already made the rounds across the internet after retail units cropped up in late August. We’ve seen it unboxed, torn apart and booted up over the past few weeks. Today marks the first time Sony has copped to the redesign’s existence.
