Into the Badlands and Warcraft actor Daniel Wu has signed onto the Tomb Raider reboot in a role that has fans theorizing over its possibilities.
Wu will play Lu Ren, the captain of the ship Lara Croft (played by Alicia Vikander) is on and a friend of her father’s, according to Variety. Some fans of the Square Enix game have begun to speculate that Wu’s character is a version of Conrad Roth. In the 2013 game, Roth is a treasure hunter, captain of the ship, Endurance, and mentor to Croft. Based on the description of Wu’s role, many people have speculated the actor will fill a similar role in the film, but Warner Bros. hasn’t commented on the speculation.
Wu’s casting announcement comes less than a week after the studio confirmed Walton Goggins (The Shield, Justified, Django Unchained) would be starring opposite Vikander. Goggins will play Croft’s main adversary, but Warner Bros. didn’t announce what his character’s name would be. This has led to more speculation from the community that Goggins may be playing a character from the game and that’s why the studio is being secretive about those details.
Warner Bros. began production on the reboot three years ago, but star Vikander didn’t sign on until April 2016. Angelina Jolie first portrayed the character in the 2001 film, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The film made $274 million at the worldwide box office and spun a sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, in 2003.
The new version of Tomb Raider is expected to be released on March 16, 2018.
