Last week a years-long mystery began to unfold in real time for fans of Elite: Dangerous. Commanders in the spacefaring game from Frontier Developments finally made first contact with an unknown alien race. Their accounts, and the videos they’ve shared, are harrowing.
Polygon reached out to Commander Dr. Kaii, one of the Elite community’s most experienced pilots, to learn more. As the leader of last year’s Distant Worlds expedition, he organized a flotilla of more than 1,000 ships to travel more than 80,000 light years to the edge of the Milky Way. He was also one of the first to encounter Elite’s new alien menace.
