The next game in the Fire Emblem franchise is in development for Nintendo 3DS. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a reworking of Fire Emblem Gaiden, Nintendo announced during a Fire Emblem-themed direct this evening.
The game will launch on May 19, Nintendo confirmed. A two-pack of amiibo based on the main characters in the game — Alm and Celica — will arrive at retail that same day.
Nintendo debuted a trailer detailing the game’s backstory, as well as comparing it to Fire Emblem Gaiden. A classic game in the series, it never hit Western shores. Shadows of Valentia will feature the earlier’s game’s cast, and Nintendo said that it has completely reimagined Gaiden for the 3DS title. The game will include full voice acting, and it will also have dungeon-crawling — rare for a Fire Emblem game.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia will be the first new Fire Emblem game in the series since Fire Emblem Fates. The game, which launched in three versions last February, also arrived on Nintendo 3DS. We were big fans of Fates, which was preceded on 3DS by the similarly well-received Fire Emblem Awakening.
Fire Emblem won’t remain 3DS-only for now; two separate Switch games are also in the works. Fire Emblem Warriors is out this fall, while an untitled mainline project is due next year.
