Dwayne Johnson will get his own Black Adam movie

Ahead of DC and WB’s Shazam

Dwayne Johnson will reportedly tackle the role of Black Adam in a stand-alone movie about the Shazam! villain.

Deadline is reporting that while Johnson has been on board to play Adam since 2014, Warner Bros. and DC have decided to give the character his own stand-alone movie. It’s unclear if Warner Bros. is prepping the character to have his own series of movies, in the same vein as Batman and Superman, but that’s certainly a possibility.

In the comics, Black Adam is the archenemy of Shazam, otherwise known as Captain Marvel. He was created as a one-time villain by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck in 1945, but was resurrected after DC acquired the rights to the Fawcett characters and began publishing Captain Marvel comics under the title Shazam! during the 1970s.

In the past few years, Johnson has become one of the most sought-after actors working today. He recently wrapped filming on Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the street racing franchise. Between Fate of the Furious, Jumanji, Baywatch and his HBO series, Ballers, Johnson has become one of the busiest actors in the industry. He’s also the highest-paid actor, pulling in $64.5 million in 2016.

Johnson will still appear in Shazam!, which is slated to be released on April 5, 2019, but Warner Bros. could potentially move the dates around to have Johnson’s Black Adam movie take Shazam!’s place.
