Netflix picked Inauguration Day to tease House of Cards' fifth season

It’s all about timing

House of Cards, a show about a cruel and manipulative politician worming his way into becoming President of the United States, will return for its fifth season in May.

And Netflix couldn’t have picked a more appropriate time to make the announcement.

The internet network released the first teaser for the new season, which features an upside-down American flag hanging outside. In the background, children’s unenthusiastic voices can be heard muttering the Pledge of Allegiance. It’s a grim setting, missing any kind of promise for the next four years.

But it probably doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that the Inauguration is happening today. Probably.

At the end of last season, President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) had delivered a fear-mongering speech about the future of the country, confirming to the American people they were at war with a terrorist group known as the ICO. At the end of the episode, sitting under the presidential seal in the Oval Office, Underwood declares they make terror; they do not succumb to it. The first teaser for the show’s return uses the same mantra.

House of Cards’ fifth season will debut on Netflix in full on May 30.
