Pokémon Bank unlocks this strange cutscene in Pokémon Sun and Moon

Bring over these Ruby and Sapphire ‘mons for a strange bit of story

The Pokémon Company

Pokémon Bank is now compatible with Pokémon Sun and Moon, making it possible for trainers to fill out their Pokédexes with monsters from every generation. While the biggest selling point is completing the newly expanded National Pokédex, the compatibility update also lets players encounter a curious new cutscene, with the help of some transferred-over old Pokémon.

Bringing over a Solrock to Pokémon Sun or Lunatone to Pokémon Moon — from Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, respectively — makes it possible to interact with a certain character in a particular way. A Reddit user breaks down the steps:

Transfer Solrock to Pokemon Sun or Lunatone to Pokemon Moon.

Put Solrock/Lunatone in your party.

Fly to Ruins of Abundance on Ula'ula Island.

Head south to enter Haina Desert.

Head to the western exit, then immediately back east (where you came from).

Head to the southern exit.

Keep heading south until you see the old man with a red shirt.

Speak to him for an interesting cutscene!

The scene in question can be watched below. Some players first discovered the mystery event not long after launch, although it’s been impossible for anyone to get Solrock and Lunatone into their parties by normal means until now.

For those who don’t mind spoiling themselves on the surprise, players will recognize the character they encounter as the strange old man who appears in the Sun and Moon demo and other places. The curious figure, upon seeing the player’s Lunatone or Solrock, experiences a sensation that somehow allows him to return home ... “back to space.”

It’s all very, very, very strange. At least the player gets a Moon Stone for their part in all of this.

To get Solrock and Lunatone into the games, players must sign up for the membership-only Pokémon Bank service. It costs $4.99 annually.
