A new episode of the Pokémon Sun and Moon anime aired earlier this week, and it was a pretty eventful one. Not only did Mimikyu, the Alola region’s creepiest Pokémon, make an appearance, but we finally got a sense of what’s under that bizarre Pikachu costume it’s wearing. Based on one classic character’s reaction to what it saw, Mimikyu can scare the living daylights out of anyone who dares to take a peek at it.
In a scene from this week’s episode, Team Rocket’s chatty Pokémon companion Meowth happens to see Mimikyu floating in a body of water. It turns out that it’s not Mimikyu, though — it’s the Pokémon’s empty costume.
What happens when Meowth has this shocking revelation is even more surprising. The tweet below captures the very moment when Meowth sees the true Mimikyu, and its reaction is pretty darn severe.

Yep. For a brief moment there, Meowth actually died from fear. Mimikyu has been well-established as the creepiest new Pokémon, but somehow, poor Meowth missed that memo. Thankfully, it recovered within seconds, but that’s a near-death experience that has already freaked out plenty of fans.
Looking at Mimikyu when it’s disrobed is a mistake that no human Pokémon trainer would ever make. Its Pokédex entry from Pokémon Sun reads, “Its actual appearance is unknown. A scholar who saw what was under its rag was overwhelmed by terror and died from the shock.”
Although our morbid curiosity makes us wish we had gotten a better look at Mimikyu’s true face, this description is enough to convince us that, no, we’re better off not knowing. Sadly, Meowth will have to live with that horrifying image in the back of its mind from now on.
