The director and producer of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Trek, and Westworld is done with reboots and remakes.
J.J. Abrams told People Magazine at the Golden Globes that while he’s had incredible success and fantastic opportunities working on beloved franchises, he wanted to explore more original work.
“You know, I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten involved in things that I loved when I was a kid,” Abrams said. “In fact, even Westworld, which we’re here for tonight, is one of them. But I don’t feel any desire to do that again.
“I feel like I’ve done enough of that that I’m more excited about working on things that are original ideas that perhaps one day someone else will have to reboot.”
Abrams has, of course, worked on original projects before. Most notably, he helped Damon Lindelof develop Lost at ABC and directed the Spielberg-inspired Super 8 in 2011. From a film perspective, however, Abrams is much more known for his work on previously established franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek and Mission Impossible.
Abrams told People that he thought unless you were moving the story or mythology forward in some way, remaking a movie felt like a mistake.
The director doesn’t currently have any directorial or writing projects on his table. He is, however, producing a great number of films and series, including Westworld, Mission Impossible 6, Star Wars: Episode 8, and a few more.
