Shin Megami Tensei 5 is heading to Nintendo Switch (update)

Whoo!

Atlus is developing Shin Megami Tensei 5, the long-awaited next entry in its flagship role-playing game franchise, for Nintendo Switch. The company unveiled its first teaser for the console game this morning as part of a livestream.

The above first look shows what appears to be in-game footage from Shin Megami Tensei 5. Set in modern-day Japan, players will be confronting a variety of demons that have come to wreak havoc across the country. Things get real, real bloody, as should be expected from the series.

First hinted at during Nintendo’s big Switch reveal event earlier this year, Shin Megami Tensei 5 is only confirmed for the hybrid handheld-home console as of now. The previous mainline entry in the series, 2013’s Shin Megami Tensei 4, was a Nintendo 3DS-exclusive. It’s possible that Atlus has now shifted the series to Nintendo’s handheld-capable platforms. (If only we could say the same for the games in the Shin Megami Tensei spinoff series Persona.)

Regarded as more cult-skewing than the more high-profile Persona games, Shin Megami Tensei is defined by its demon negotiation system and turn-based combat. Newcomers interested in checking out the original SMT games can try the most recent release, Shin Megami Tensei 4: Apocalypse, a story that takes place parallel to the mainline Shin Megami Tensei 4. It launched stateside on Nintendo 3DS last fall.

Update: In case any local fans were worried, Shin Megami Tensei 5 will launch in the West as well. Nintendo released an updated, English-language version of the teaser. Watch it above.
