Godzilla anime pits man against beast in futuristic new trailer

There are a few Pacific Rim elements thrown in

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters’ newest trailer reimagines the traditional Godzilla format, pitting man against beast with a sci-fi twist.

The new trailer for Toho Animation’s movie, which will be released in Japan next month and stream on Netflix around the world at a later date, gives us our best look yet the anime feature. Here’s the story: Earth was abandoned in 2048 as people fled to escape the perilous situation brought upon by the emergence of giant monsters. A group of people decide to return to Earth 20,000 years later and defeat the monsters once and for all.

In the trailer, we get our best look yet at Godzilla and his kaiju counterparts that the humans will have to fight. Equipped with new mech suits, powerful aircraft and weaponry, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters comes across like a combination of traditional Godzilla films and newer, Godzilla-inspired series, like Pacific Rim.

Although there isn’t an English-dubbed version available just yet, the trailer does allow for English subtitles. A full synopsis of the movie can be read below:

The animated movie takes the franchise into uncharted territory — a harsh world of the future in which Godzilla has dominated the Earth for the past 20,000 years, and a fateful final confrontation with mankind looms. Prepare for the earth-shattering roar of a brand new Godzilla, unlike anything heard or seen before.

Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters will be released in theaters in Japan on Nov. 17. There is no premiere date for the movie on Netflix at this time.
