To mark Warner Bros.’ international press tour for Justice League, the studio released a new trailer for Chinese audiences on the social media platform, Weibo.
The most eye-catching part of the new trailer, which was added to YouTube via TrailerTrack, is Justice League’s new big bad, Steppenwolf. Unlike in previous trailers, the international spot puts a focus on Steppenwolf’s presence in the movie. One scene captures Steppenwolf talking to a terrified man who begs the leader of Apokolips’ army to let him live, pleading to release him so he can return to his family.
The brief exchange provides more than a just a glimpse into Steppenwolf as a character, but also the lighter tone Justice League is trying to accomplish. The few lines of dialogue we hear from Steppenwolf, or other characters like Batman and Aquaman, are notably funnier than what we’ve heard in Batman v Superman or Man of Steel. Joss Whedon, who stepped in to take over directorial duties for Zack Snyder, was reportedly tasked with making the movie a little lighter and more comedic.
There is still much we don’t know about Steppenwolf. We can assume that he’ll act as the leader of the parademon army; a general in the Darkseid’s forces. We also know he’s not the only enemy that Justice League will be tasked with defeating. Those same parademons that we saw in Batman v Superman have returned as the first line of defense for Darkseid.
Steppenwolf still has his work cut out for him, however, with his role in Justice League defining the threat level the superhero group will have to face in later installments.
Justice League will be released on Nov. 17.
