Nurse Joy is the hardest-working person in the entire Pokémon universe. We’re so used to seeing her behind the desk at the Pokémon Center that when she does get up and take a break — like in a special cutscene found in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon — it’s both a surprise and a moment of pride.
YouTuber Maxx Ezzy posted a how-to video that explains what to do to encourage Joy to take a drink break on the other side of reception. Above, watch as the player sits down with Joy and the pair shoot the breeze.
Getting the scene involves visiting the Malie City Pokémon Center, where Joy is posted up as usual. Talking to the barista in the corner of the building will sometimes trigger the cutscene, which Maxx Ezzy likens to a date. Nurse Joy overhears your brief chat with the barista, who talks about the virtues of relaxation.
“I’m going to take a break, too!” Joy exclaims, hands on hips. She joins you at the coffee counter, orders “the usual” and proceeds to talk about just how taxing her job can get sometimes.
It sounds like she actually does get to rest up more than we see, although Joy has abandoned her post before. In games like Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Nurse Joy is seen outside of the Pokémon Center in a few particular spots. Talking to her often leads to a jokey response about the strangeness of the situation.
Little moments like these make Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon worth checking out, even if they don’t have much else for returning players of Sun and Moon. There is one more reason to play the new games if you’re really into Nurse Joy, however: If you complete the Pokédex and are playing as a female trainer, you’ll unlock Nurse Joy’s outfit for yourself.
